The University of Utah has made an announcement which is going to be an amazing delight for video game addicts all over the world.

Extending a high-profile endorsement to the industry that is growing at a pace faster than ever, the university has declared that it will now offer scholarships to video gamers. This makes Utah the first school in the “Power Five” to offer scholarships for video gaming. “Power Five” is the term for the five richest athletic conferences in college sports.

A.J. Dimick, Director of Operations for the new esports program of the University of Utah, says that he hopes other schoosl will participate in the program. Dimick said

Gaming is already such a big deal on campus. These kids don’t need help playing games or help competing. The hole we’re filling is they want to be able to represent their university with what they’re good at and passionate about. It’s not about the game, it’s about the school.

The scholarships, amounting to USD 1,000, will first be offered partially to 35 students. The school plans to extend full scholarships to up to 35 gaming enthusiasts once the program gains momentum and is able to fetch revenues from sponsorship and marketing.

Supported by the video game development program, Salt Lake City School, the first varsity e-sports team of Utah will play Riot Games’ League of Legends and participate in collegiate league of Riot. More teams that will compete in other games are yet to be announced.

Utah’s Entertainment Arts & Engineering Department will sponsor the program. It has been designated as the best video game design program in the year 2016 by The Princeton Review.
